I am not an
Atenean. But by the way I cheer, scream, or groan during their
UAAP basketball games, you'd think I am (can you relate,
babygurl?).
I wasn't able to watch last Saturday's game versus
Adamson University from the start. I only caught the last 4 minutes and that was enough for me to conclude that it was a great game. It was their first game since they lost their star player, Larry Fonacier, to injury. In the beginning, according to my brother, Adamson had a huge lead against Ateneo. At one point, they had a 20 point lead. It was enough to dampen the high spirits of the crowd in blue.
But I don't know. Somehow I feel that the Eagles have a flair for drama and suspense. They intentionally lose, avoid scoring points, in the beginning and then dramatically catch up with the other team at the end. When I watched the last four minutes of the game, Adamson lead by just 1 point. I was at the bar watching with our DJ, my brother and A. The suspense was just killing me. I was hiding behind A, trying to supress my squeals of delight. Within 2 minutes, the score was tied, 55-55. I kept praying and praying, please let Ateneo score... or at least put us in over time. And when LA Tenorio made that amazing step forward- step back- shoot a 3 pointer move that lead them to the top, I didn't care. We all cheered, thereby distracting our clients. Great game, indeed.
Great spirit too, as the players wore Larry Fonacier's number on their jerseys. The crowd sported Larry Fonacier jerseys, shirts and banners. A footage of Larry Fonacier's mom crying with her fist raised in triumph was shown right after LA Tenorio made the winning shot.
It was so funny how the next day, while talking about the game, my sister, Ara, and I showed our elation the same way. While narrating to Cami the last few seconds of the game, describing how LA Tenorio made the shot, we both cheered. We looked at each other and shrieked, "EEEEEE!!!!!!!" while clapping our hands together, the exact same way. So funny and so weird.
I hope ADMU wins the championships again. I love their bonfire victory parties! (I saw you there last time,
babygurl! Remember that? We were both crossing Katipunan!)
